NCL Getaway Bails on the Baltics and the NCL Escape Can't Escape the Port

Norwegian Getaway's cruises have been cancelled and the Norwegian Escape is sailing again after grounding in Taino Port.

Reacting to the continuing war in Ukraine, Norwegian Cruise Line has decided to cancel most of its Baltic cruises for the Norwegian Getaway. The official statement from the company read, "After further review. We have decided to cancel Norwegian Getaway's cruises with embarkation dates from June 14. 2022. through and including October 9. 2022." Guests will receive a full refund and 10 percent off their next cruise.

Todd Hamilton. Senior Vice President of Sales. "Our hearts go out to those impacted by these devastating events. We will continue to monitor the events in Ukraine closely and focus on making the right choice."

This decision makes Norwegian the first cruise line to cancel cruises rather than adjust itineraries.

In a bit of irony, the Norwegian Escape could not escape the new Port of Taino Bay channel in Puerto Plata, the Dominican Republic. The ship was aground in the channel for several hours. Reports are that very high winds pushed the ship as it exited the port. The Escape was pulled off the sand by local tugs and returned to port for a damage assessment. A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said the Norwegian Escape "made contact with the channel bed as it was departing Puerto Plata." A further statement said, “All guests and crew are safe, and there are no reports of damages to the ship. Operations on board have not been impacted, and all services and activities continue as scheduled.”

The cruise has now resumed, and the ship continued its voyage to the Virgin Islands.
