Referendum to Limit Cruise Ships in Juneau Doesn't Sail
It seems most people want the ships to visit.
Juneau resident Karla Hart, one of the founders of Juneau Cruise Control, a group that has been seeking to place a referendum on the October ballot to limit cruise ship size and time in port, has announced that the group failed to acquire enough signatures. In a statement Hart said, “In choosing to not sign, the people of Juneau have shown solidarity and support of a diverse and sustainable economy.
The greatest outcome of this process has been witnessing Juneau’s undeniable dedication to a climate that fosters economic diversification and honors the spirit that has given birth to so many wonderful opportunities for Juneau’s citizens to thrive.” The letter also stated that the group felt they failed to get the signatures because potential signers feared “retribution as a consequence of signing” and said they worried doing so could jeopardize their job and relationships.
