Celebrity Edge Sailing June 26 Whether DeSantis Likes it or Not
Cruise Line pushing back against new Florida law.
The Royal Caribbean Group has announced that the Celebrity Edge will sail from Port Everglades on June 26 with the first revenue cruise since the industry shut down.
"Cruising from the U.S. is back!" said Richard Fain, Royal
Caribbean Group chairman, and CEO. "After months of working with the CDC, other government officials, our Healthy Sail Panel, and industry partners, we can again offer cruise lovers the chance to enjoy the wonders of cruising. We are truly thankful to reach this special milestone."
Celebrity has announced that all guests on this voyage will be required to be vaccinated. That decision is at odds with the recently passed Florida law that makes it illegal for any business or government agency to require anyone to be vaccinated. “We’ve been very clear, the law is clear in Florida,” said Taryn Fenske, spokesperson for the governor. “You can’t mandate vaccine passports. We are interested to see how the CDC works with them so that they don’t get these exorbitant fines.”
Celebrity CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo does not seem bothered and said in a statement, "For the past 15 months, our conversations with friends and loved ones about seeing the world have been accompanied by the phrase 'someday.' I'm beyond proud and excited to say that day has arrived."
